Goya,
El Greco, Murillo, Zurbaran and Rubens await you in Cadiz
Goya, El Greco, Murillo, Zurbaran and even Rubens are to be found
behind the doors of churches, palaces and museums in Cadiz. However,
many of these works are still relatively unknown even to the town's
local inhabitants. The artists painted religious motifs "ex
profeso" for these churches, discoveries which are still
there behind their doors. A simple route to see these works starts
off from the Provincial Museum, in Plaza de Mina. There are true
XVII century masterpieces on the first floor. Zurbaran, Murillo
and Ribera are the key highlights.
Cadiz is predominantly a port town and at one time had more contact
with the Netherlands and Italy than it did with Andalusia. It
is no surprise therefore that we should come across a Rubens in
the Museum representing the Sacred Family. This painting route
also takes us to the Oratorio de la Santa Cueva, in calle Rosario.
The three "goyas", in the upper chapel are a treasure
that adorns this building, right in the city centre. In the "constitutional"
oratory of San Felipe Neri, visitors can see another of Murillo's
Cadiz works. And finally the chapel of the Hospital de Mujeres
houses an El Greco painting of Saint Francis.
