GREEN LIFE: THROUGH ROYAL RURAL TRACKS TO THE TARAJE LAGOON
GREEN LIFE: through royal
rural tracks to the taraje lagoon
Old cañadas reales used to be public tracks back in medieval times. They provided a connection between rural populations and were prominently used for driving cattle. These paths reached their peak in the 15th and 16th centuries. The course of cañadas reales to the Laguna del Taraje, in Puerto Real, qualified as a Nature Reserve, can be completed by foot, mountain bike or horse. You may start from different sites, although the easiest is the track of Jinetes de la Bahía Equestrian Club, on the El Marquesado road, next to Barrio Jarana. You will have to complete 4.5 kilometres. During your walk you will pass through a pine wood, surrounded by Mediterranean forest. Once you reach your destination you will contemplate a green landscape of Mediterranean bushes. Recalling fauna, the most interesting species in the area are the water birds which live in the 37,43 hectares of lagoon. When the lagoon's water rises, it works as a supplier of the San Antonio lagoon, a further part, with the lagoons of Taraje and Comisario of the Puerto Real complex.
