castles and walls share space
with the typical white façade houses
The cultural heritage in the whitewashed villages of the Province
of Cádiz is presented in the Castilian-Nazari Frontier Route
which is now being promoted by the Mountain Range's Mancomunidad de
Municipios. The medieval age favoured the encounter of different cultures.
Villages grew under the shelter of fortresses where peaceful coexistence
and exchange were promoted. The Zahara de la Sierra medieval village
is an excellent example of how castles were surrounded by whitewashed
houses. The Islamic Fortress and Village in Setenil de las Bodegas
is another must.
Old mosques preceded churches, towers, walls and streets. The Homage
Tower in Olvera was a Christian bastion in the defence of the frontier
between the 13th and 15th centuries. The upper area of Benaocaz presents
the Nazari estate, with genuine house-fortresses. Another interesting
site is the village that surrounds the Torre Alháquime Fortress.
Manga de Villaluenga connects the mountain ranges of Málaga
and Cádiz, with many medieval sites and the traces of an old
Roman Pavement which is still being used for cattle and rural tourism.
And a Medieval Pavement is Grazalema's highlight, the prolongation
of a rural path which ends in the lower estate, where you will encounter
many fortresses remains.
