Los Barrios’ first four star hotel is to be opened this spring. It will have 57 double rooms and five suites, a 182 metre2 swimming pool, hydro-massage and sauna facilities, a restaurant with a seating capacity of 360 and a ballroom and reception area for 225 people. The hotel will also have a buffet/restaurant as well as a café/bar. The garden will be situated at the back where there will be a lawn in front of the conference room.

According to the development company Blumen Plas, it is a modern hotel with an urban feel. Conveniently located in Los Barrios, it is an attractive option for all types of tourism as “we are well situated both for the business traveller and the tourist wanting to enjoy beaches as well as Los Alcornocales (cork oaks) nature reserve” It is only 18 km from the Gibraltar Airport and 70 km from Jeréz Airport.

The building project also takes in the site between the hotel and the bullring where parking space will be created.

La Ruta del Toro

The hotel takes its name from the town’s bullring which is in turn named after the “Montera del Torero”, a natural monument situated a few kilometres away and so called because it resembles a bullfighters cap precisely at this spot through which the “Ruta del Toro” (the Route of the Bull) passes.

This route allows visitors to see ranches where the famous Spanish “toros bravos” are reared, the bullfighting museum, the most important bullrings, bullfights and other authentic and dangerous fiestas such as that of the “toro embolao” which takes place in Los Barrios.

In this province, which is so closely linked to the world of bulls and bullfighting, there are also ranches which rear “retinta” bulls, a type of bull whose meat is renowned for its excellent taste and texture.

In some of the ranches there are exhibitions and tours. There visitors can see the bulls in their natural habitat and see how the toros bravos” are reared and selected. You can even try bullfighting yourself (with a young calf) or enjoy the celebrations or gatherings which take place on a traditional country estate - a most unique environment.

This four star hotel will also serve as a training school, offering courses organised by Los Barrios Town Hall for those in the hotel and catering industry. The hotel will also be used for events organised in the municipality such as trade fairs and congresses.

According to official data from the local Town Hall, the Montera Plaza occupies a total area of 7106 m2 distributed over five floors including a basement and an underground car park. More than 4.5 million euros have been invested in the project.

The right to build the hotel on a municipal site was given to Blumen Plas S.L. whose associates have created the company Hotel Montera Plaza to run the establishment and its installations.
