Cadiz at full speed

In mid September, fifty racing drivers from all over Spain will take part in Andalusia's most important rally in a spectacular setting: the Sierra de Cadiz mountains.

Over 75,000 car enthusiasts will come to the south of Spain to enjoy the fifteen competitions organised by the Escuderia Sur and the Escuderia Ubrique motor-racing teams in Cadiz each year. The racing takes place across the wetlands, plains and rugged mountains that make up the impressive landscape of the province of Cadiz.

The X Sierra de Cádiz Rally will be held on the 15th and 16th September. The drivers will set off from El Bosque and then go through the municipal districts of Prado del Rey, Grazalema and Zahara de la Sierra, which are part of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. The route climbs up to its highest point at the Puerto de las Palomas mountain pass, located at 1350 metres above sea level in the natural park.

A Biosphere Reserve, the north of the province of Cadiz seems to have come almost straight off a chocolate box to anyone doing the White Villages Route for the first time. These villages, with their narrow, winding streets, were built by the Arabs centuries ago. During the third weekend in September, the frenetic world of rally driving will visit this picturesque landscape.

The Sierra de Cadiz mountains, a unique setting

On Friday 15th September, the 2006 Sierra de Cádiz Rally will begin with the relevant administrative and technical checks of the vehicles that are then kept in a locked lot on El Bosque’s main Barriada la Vega avenue where the drivers cannot enter until the next morning.

The competition will begin at 10.00 a.m. on Saturday 16th September and the participating teams will compete in 10 speed stretches (2x3 and 2x2 times). They will then return to the base around 8.00 p.m. and the prize giving will be held one hour later.

It will be a social event to remember for the Sierra de Cádiz region, and this year will be held at the same time as a hang-gliding championship, and is also a major sporting event as the winner of the Andalusian championship will probably be revealed during the rally. This event is a coefficient five rally, which means that the points are multiplied by five, while the others held in the region are category three or four.

The II Clasica Sierra de Cadiz rally, which is for cars over twenty-five years old, is also scheduled to be held in September.

Speed and bends in the Bay of Cadiz

The noisy world of motor racing has two other important dates along the coast: the third San Fernando slalom will be held on August 5th and the XIX El Puerto de Santa Maria race will take place close to La Puntilla beach on 23rd September. An excellent opportunity to enjoy the Bay of Cadiz at the height of summer.
The competition will begin at six in the evening and will last between two and three hours, when enthusiasts and tourists alike will be able to enjoy the cars and the races around the earth and tarmac circuit.
The slalom consists of completing a circuit of cones and obstacles of approximately one kilometre in length in the shortest possible time.
It is the most basic version of rally racing, where all drivers begin their careers as it is one that is most affordable and open to amateurs. You just need a car, a helmet, bars, safety belts and be a member of the<
