Guided tours by actors bring El Alcázar de Jeréz to life.

Every Saturday at midday, El Alcázar, steps back in time and those historical characters intrinsically linked to the old fortress recount its often troubled history.

Seven actors, taking the roles of the main historical figures associated with the monument, welcome visitors and guide them through the enclave, telling the most important stories and episodes and events which took place in El Alcázar and playing out fight scenes, dances as well as other surprises.

With entrance tickets costing 5 Euros, visitors can meet Rey Aben Obeid, Fortún de Torres, Doña Blanca - the wife of Pedro I of Castile, the poet Abu Arm Giyat or the Marqués of Cádiz, amongst others.

De Ida y Vuelta is the award winning company responsible for this well documented and researched venture, and its director, Ana del Corral, promises that various surprises await visitors, including, amongst other things, a tea ceremony. This project combines entertainment with “meticulous historical accuracy” while at the same time not forgetting “educative and didactic aspects”

El Alcázar de Jeréz dates back to the 11th Century and has Arab baths and a Mosque which King Alfonso X (the Wise) transformed into the chapel of Santa María.

Ida y Vuelta recreate the history of the fortress during the Almohade and Christian eras and the life of some of its most illustrious inhabitants, such as Doña Blanca or the Marqués of Cádiz, whose most distinguished guests at the Alcázar included the Catholic Kings, Ferdinand and Isabella.

Julian Gutierrez, the Delegate of Culture at the local Town Hall of Jeréz, has emphasised that this new venture will enable the citizens to learn more about their cultural heritage, will help endorse fraternity between the different races and cultures who once lived together in the city as well as promoting the development of the city’s tourist industry.
