The Sierra de Cádiz Greenway sets an example in South America

The managing director of the Sierra de Cadiz Greenway Foundation, María Jiménez Rodríguez, attended the II International Greenway Seminars held in Veracruz (Mexico) to outline the management and marketing of the Cadiz greenway that was nominated the best European greenway in October 2005.

This 36-kilometer route runs along a former 19th-century railway that the visitors can now walk, cycle or ride along to enjoy the nature and being outdoors in this spot where cars are banned.

It was initially built to export sherries and was Spain's first railway line, but it was never operational. It is now one of the most interesting tourist itineraries in the Sierra de Cadiz mountains.

The Sierra de Cadiz greenway is an excellent way for the visitor to enjoy the White Villages Route, discover the Grazalema natural park. There are inns, visitors' centres and reception centres along the route where the visitors can get information about the route, flora, fauna, sports opportunities, gastronomy and history of this itinerary.

This tourist and environmental resource that runs through various towns of the province of Cadiz (Olvera and Puerto Serrano) and of the province of Seville (Coripe, Montellano, El Coronil and Pruna).

On 21st October 2005, the chairman of the Foundation, Francisco Menacho, went to Lille (France) to collect the prize for the Best European Greenway in the area of “Activities and Promotion”, awarded by the European Greenways Association. On 28th February 2006, the Autonomous Government of Andalusia granted the Sierra de Cadiz Greenway one of the special Andalusia Day recognitions and last October it received the award for the best regional tourist product at the Tierra Adentro inland tourism fair held Jaén.

The prizes are not only in recognition of the natural setting of the Greenway as a green route. They also assess the available resources for promoting that ecological activity and strengthen the links between this natural space and the surrounding towns.

The Sierra de Cadiz's international reputation was increased last month when the chairman of the foundation, Francisco Menacho, the provincial councillor, took part at the "Borsa Verde" rural tourism fair held in the Italian town of Salerno.

Turismo Andaluz public company, Cadiz and Seville provincial councils, Cadiz Provincial Tourist Board, the Greenway Foundation and the Sierra de Cádiz Rural Tourism Association have signed an agreement to continue disseminating this path. They will contribute a total of 450,000 euros over the next three years to encourage more tourists to come and enjoy this route.
