Hospes San Blas, from conqueror´s palace to five-star hotel

width=In early 2008, Hospes Palacio San Plas, a five-star hotel, will open in Jerez de la Fontera. This 61-room hotel owned by the Hospes Hotels & Moments is housed in the former home of Juan Ponce de Leon, the Spanish explorer, a 15th-century building declared to be a site of historical-artistic interest.

The hotel will have 12 rooms in the Palace and a further 49 in the adjoining buildings. A complex originally consisting of the palace, with its wine cellars, stables, a granary and even an oil mill, where most of the hotel's facilities will be located.

Juan Ponce de León, the Spanish explorer, who crossed the Atlantic after King Ferdinand "the Catholic" ordered him to look for the Fountain of Youth, was the first person to live in the Palace.

During the second half of the 18th century, French, British and Spanish traders settled in Jerez, attracted by the flourishing sherry business, and built the many mansions and palaces to be found in the city, a fine example of which is the Hospedería San Blas.

width=The building belonged to the Domecq de la Riva family until 2002. Some of the many features of note are its Baroque stone façade overlooking the city’s market square (Plaza del Mercado), the balcony and the lattice windows, together with the large doorways and the decorative tiles with images that reflect Jerez's historical tradition.

The Hospes Palacio San Blas alone has a surface area of 1,800 m2. The 5,140 m2 of the other buildings will house a Senzone Restaurant with an outside dining area and a Senzone Bar that can be accessed directly from the street, together with a Bodyna Spa, inside and outside swimming pool, fitness area, floatarium, Utmost rooms for meetings and special events… which is the name that the chain gives to its installations to reflect the special mark left by its outstanding service.
width=The complex is spread over two and three stories, depending on the zones, and has a central courtyard, cloisters that the rooms look out over and a tower.
The Hospes chain is noted for its obsession with detail and its excellent service. All the chain’s hotels are located in exceptional settings, as its strategy is based on renovating houses, palaces and outstanding buildings to convert them into hotels offering the best facilities.
