The Bay of Cadiz catamarans to run more frequently thanks to the influx of tourists
With over a thousand people using the service every day, the catamarans, which have been crossing the Bay of Cadiz since June 6th, will run more frequently at weekends to deal with the large number of tourists who wish to visit the city of Cadiz, El Puerto de Santa Maria and Rota.
Over 75,000 passengers have already used the catamarans that have so far made 13 trips each way between Cadiz and El Puerto on weekdays and four between the city and Rota.
Until August 27th, the service will be doubled on Sundays and public holidays with six trips in each direction between El Puerto de Santa Maria and Cadiz. On Saturdays, the last catamaran between El Puerto and Cadiz will be at 22.30 and will leave Cadiz at 23.00 hours.
Initially designed to be a public transport alternative for the inhabitants of the Bay, this highly attractive means of transport is now attracting tourists: these recently constructed vessels by Navantia have an open-air deck where the passengers can enjoy the sea breezes as they cross the Bay and the views of the cities over looking it. Or they can opt to go downstairs to the lower sound-proofed and air-conditioned deck, where there is a coffee shop and TV.
The catamarans can carry up to 150 passengers and are the quickest way to cross the Bay, operate all year round and the journey only takes half an hour.
The first departure is at 7:10 in the morning from El Puerto de Santa Maria to Cadiz and the last catamaran leaves Cadiz at 23:30 hours.
The journey only costs 1.60 euro to El Puerto de Santa Maria and 3.60 to Rota. Children under four travel free and there are no supplements for bicycles or motorbikes.
The Maritime Service of the Bay of Cadiz's Transport Consortium plans to launch a third catamaran to ensure a good service on both lines.
